Ravel originally wrote this audience favourite for piano in 1899, before he transformed it with his unparalleled skills as an orchestrator 11 years later.
Ravel claimed the title - Pavane pour une infante défunte – “Pavane for a dead princess” – was meaningless, and it’s reported that he said “I simply liked the sound of those words and I put them there, c’est tout – that’s all".
