A spokesperson for the museum, Kate Camp, says New Zealanders are exempt from the proposal adding entry will always be free for Kiwis.
It’s one way for the museum to offset costs and says the proposal is still in its early stages.
It’s the most visited art gallery in New Zealand with more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
Entry has been free since it opened in 1998.
Te Papa took a significant hit to commercial revenue streams during Covid.
It receives about 42 million dollars a year from the Government and that figure hasn’t increased since 2019.

Labour arts spokesperson - MP Rachel Boyack is calling for ACT MP Todd Stephenson to be removed from his arts portfolio following what she describes as a "bizarre interview" that she says reveals he knows "little about the arts".
In an interview with Newsroom, Stephenson took 20 minutes to think of a single New Zealand author and the only artistic experience mentioned was seeing the musical Hamilton in New York.
