Te Papa is considering charging overseas visitors an entry fee - as it faces rising costs.

A spokesperson for the museum, Kate Camp, says New Zealanders are exempt from the proposal adding entry will always be free for Kiwis.

It’s one way for the museum to offset costs and says the proposal is still in its early stages.

It’s the most visited art gallery in New Zealand with more than 1.5 million visitors each year.

Entry has been free since it opened in 1998.

Te Papa took a significant hit to commercial revenue streams during Covid.

It receives about 42 million dollars a year from the Government and that figure hasn’t increased since 2019.

Kiwi soprano Madison Nonoa has been given the prestigious 50 thousand dollar Dame Malvina Major Award.

She says it’s pivotal in enabling her to continue developing her career in Europe.

From Waikato and of Samoan, Niuean and Pakeha heritage, Madison is a graduate of both University of Auckland and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Currently based in Portugal, Madison says recent highlights include her highly commended debut as Amore in Orfeo and Eurydice - at the Salzburg Festival.

The fund was established in 2020 - and funded by Joan Egan to acknowledge Dame Malvina’s legacy.

Labour arts spokesperson - MP Rachel Boyack is calling for ACT MP Todd Stephenson to be removed from his arts portfolio following what she describes as a "bizarre interview" that she says reveals he knows "little about the arts".

In an interview with Newsroom, Stephenson took 20 minutes to think of a single New Zealand author and the only artistic experience mentioned was seeing the musical Hamilton in New York.

Boyack, who professes the arts to be passion, says there are people in the ACT Party caucus such as Brooke van Velden who appear to have a much stronger interest and background in the arts.

In a statement this week, Stephenson said he was sceptical about taxpayers funding the arts.

Crocheting is going mainstream this Mother's Day.

The Mona Lisa may be moved to an underground chamber.

Louvre director Laurence des Cars has suggested the relocation of the popular artwork to a dedicated room constructed in the institution’s basement.

He says the museum isn’t doing well in welcoming people to view the work - which in its current place - looks like a postage stamp.

The Louvre receives nine million visitors each year, and according to museum officials, the
Mona Lisa is the main attraction for 80 percent of them.

In a blow to the fashion industry - New Zealand Fashion Week has been cancelled for 2024.
The event, a fixture on Auckland's fashion calendar, would have been held in August.

NZ Fashion Week owner, Feroz Ali, says the economic downturn and pressure on consumer spending has led to the decision to hold the event every two years.

The next fashion week is expected to take place in the second half of 2025.

Ali says consumer confidence is at an all-time low and the fashion retail industry has been particularly affected by the reduced consumer spending.
