France has beaten Croatia 4-2 to take home the World Cup for the second time in 20 years. The whole FIFA tournament has been a wild ride of highs and lows, all documented on social media, and the final game was certainly no exception. Here's how the world reacted to the historic match.

World leaders were under the spotlight while the game was underway. This photo of French president Emmanuel Macron celebrating Les Bleus' first goal was captured by Alexei Nikolsky of Russia's TASS news agency, and spread like wildfire.

And the joyous interactions between Mr Macron and Croatia's president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović didn't go unnoticed either.

In fact, Ms Grabar-Kitarović was on the receiving end of a lot of love.

And her likeness to a certain Parks and Recreation character also didn't go unseen.

Meanwhile, Mr Putin was captured being classically Putin.

The players were far too busy to notice the politics. But World Cup rising star Kylian Mbappé did get a little cuddle from an elated Mr Macron after receiving the best young player award.

And the rest of the globe took a moment to think about what they were doing at 19 years old - i.e not winning World Cup finals.

Teammate Paul Pogba drove the internet nuts with his victorious dabbing.

His whole family even got in on the act.

Though, not everyone's a fan of the dab.

It wasn't just French players who were celebrated on social media; Croatia's Luka Modric stole the hearts of footy fans.

And he also got a hug from a world leader.

Some Twitter followers suggested that Croatia were the real winners on the day.

But the people on the streets of France seem happy with the cup.
