A man has been charged following the death of a 55-year-old woman who was struck by a car in Wellington last night.

The woman was hit on Garden Road just after 9pm last night and died before she could be taken to hospital.
Wellington police are treating the case as a homicide investigation.
Detective Sergeant Haley Ryan said a 58-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court this morning charged with assaulting the woman using a car as a weapon and excess breath alcohol.
Mr Ryan said the investigation was continuing and it was possible other charges may be laid.
The man has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court on Monday.
A post mortem will be conducted this afternoon
