Christchurch CBD lease arrangements

The unit charged with rebuilding the central business district in Christchurch says it is working with the Government on various leasing options to entice commercial tenants back into the central city.

The Central City Development Unit, which is part of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, says all commercial and residential space coming online will be affordable.

Director Warwick Isaacs says options such as long-term leases and flexible terms of settlement are being considered to encourage tenants to lease space.

He believes businesses won't sign lease agreements until more property is offered.

The Crown has begun sending final offers to the owners of properties needed for anchor projects and it may need to use its powers of compulsory acquisition in some instances.

Despite the costs, Warren & Mahoney principal Daryl Maquire says his business wants to be in the CBD.
