Final purchase offers sent to owners of rebuild land

Property owners who own land destined to be used for Christchurch's rebuild projects have been sent final purchase offers by the Government.

Agreements are in place for 80% of the designated land area for the Convention Centre Precinct, the Bus Interchange and the top part of the East Frame. Those who have been sent letters are the owners who haven't signed up.

A spokesperson for the Christchurch Central Development Unit, Baden Ewart, says if it is unable to reach an agreement, the Government may consider acquiring the property.

Mr Ewart says that while compulsory acquisition is not the preferred method, the unit can't afford to hold up the development of the new central city.

Full timeframes and milestones for each of the anchor projects will be released by the unit before 1 September.
