Fletcher says no shortage of work in Christchurch

Fletcher Building says there isn't a lack of rebuild and repair work in Christchurch for builders and decorators, despite suggestions from some who say they're floundering.

Several people in the industry have told Radio New Zealand they've noticed a tailing off in residential repair jobs and some have laid off staff.

Fletcher Building disagrees there's a work shortage but says the type of work is changing, on the more seriously damaged properties, and that could be throwing some contractors.

Fletcher Earthquake Repair general manager David Peterson says repairs have become more complex and a wider variety of tradespeople are needed on most jobs.

He says although specialised contractors, such as plasterers, may not be needed for as long on each project, there is still a lot of work.

Mr Peterson says Fletcher is only halfway through its home repair programme and another 30,000 or 40,000 homes need to be fixed by the end of next year.
