A funeral service is to be held today at Fua'motu in Tonga for Tavake Fungavaka, the father of New Zealand policeman Kali Fungavaka who was killed while in police custody 21 months ago.
Matangi Tonga reports that Tavake Fungavaka, who was in his 60s, died at the weekend.
He had travelled to Tonga from his home in the United States for the funeral of an elderly aunt and also attended the first day of the trial into his son's killing, but Matangi Tonga says he had not been seen in the court in subsequent weeks.
Five police are facing manslaughter charges over Kali Fungavaka's death.
A civilian is to face the same charge in a separate trial.
