The criminal court in New Caledonia has jailed a policeman for two years after finding him guilty of a range of charges, including theft and sale of illegal drugs.

Noumea's daily newspaper says the policeman was convicted for embezzlement, falsification of records, forgery of public documents and offer or sale of narcotic drugs for two gendarmes then in office.

A former policeman and his wife, who is a lawyer, have also been convicted in the case, with him getting a suspended prison sentence and her being fined.
