The Pacific Partnership is expecting to leave behind a safer Kiribati after its teams dispose of explosive remnants of the Second World War on Betio on Tarawa.

There are a few hundred items of explosives and old weapons left behind on Betio.

The lieutenant commander of the HMNZS Manawanui, Kerry Driver, says most of the remnants sit just under a metre of water about 300 to 400 metres from the shore.

"Basically we're up here to assist one of our specialist partners with our specialist skills and tools to dispose of these remnants of war, and really to just create a safer environment for the local population."

Lieutenant commander, Kerry Driver, says they had previously been deployed to Munda in Solomon Islands, where they disposed of about 2,100 explosive remnants of the war, ranging from old grenades to 1,000 pound bombs.
