The Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu'ivakano, has announced an exemption from the consumption tax on sales for the fisheries sector.
Matangi Tonga reports that at the same time, a government fund set for agricultural exporters will be reallocated to the agriculture ministry to help increase production.
Lord Tu'ivakano is reported as saying the cabinet decision to offer the initiatives to both sectors emphasises the commitment of government to reviving the struggling Tongan economy.
The announcement has been welcomed by those in the fishing industry, who campaigned for exemption from the 15 percent tax, as being in line with what the government had previously offered the agriculture and tourism industries.
