PNG Parliament to elect new governor general today

7:32 am on 14 January 2011

The Papua New Guinea Parliament sits today to elect a new governor general.

The vote comes after the Supreme Court ruled in December that the June election of Sir Paulias Matane was unconstitutional.

Our corresponden Alexander Rheeney says only two candidates have recieved the required 15 signatures to be nominated for the position.

"Higher Education Minister, Michael Ogio, he's the Government nominee, and the other candidate is Sir Pato Kakaraya, who was nominated by the opposition caucus. Michael Ogio is the odds on favourite at the moment, because the government has the numbers to be able to get him through the exhaustive ballot."

Alex Rheeney says the opposition is unlikely to be able to lodge a motion of no confidence in the Government, as the acting speaker, Francis Maru, has indicated the Governor General will be the only business.
