Paias Wingti fails to overturn vote for Governor in PNG's Western Highlands

The governor of Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands province, Tom Olga has narrowly beaten his rival and former governor Paias Wingti by just over a 1000 votes in the recount for the seat.

The Post-Courier newspaper reports that Mr Olga scored 140,246 votes to Mr Wingti's 139,242 in the court-directed recount of votes which ended on the weekend.

The recount was ordered by the Court of Disputed Returns following an appeal by Mr Wingti.

The result will be returned to the National Court for a declaration to be made.
