American Samoa Senator calls for higher tax on all beer imports

10:35 am on 12 April 2007

American Samoa Senator Faiivae Galeai plans to add new changes to a Senate measure that imposed higher tax on Vailima beer imported from Samoa.

The current bill hikes import tax on Vailima Beer from 190 percent to 500 percent and local importer GHC Reid says the proposed increase is discriminatory because it targets only one beer brand.

Samoa News quotes Senator Faiivae saying that he plans to add amendments to the measure to include all imported beers, because he is sure that the bill will not pass in its current language.

The Fono is currently in recess and returns in July.
