The Cook Islands Prime Minister, Jim Maruruai, says the political aims of a United Nations body for Small Islands states, have not lived up to expectation.
Mr Maruruai is attending the Small Island Developing States or SIDS meeting in Mauritius this week, with other government leaders and heads of states.
The U.N. meeting will review the implementation of the Programme of Action for SIDS, which was agreed to a decade ago at a Global Conference in Barbados.
He said in a statement that the political commitment and directions required for meeting the goals of sustainable development has been mixed.
He says he hopes to engage other leaders at the U.N. meeting to further implement the aims of the Barbados Programme of Action.
Mr Marurai says they have developed a national sustainable development plan for the Cook Islands.
